Tips on Working through an Interpreter
- Briefing the interpreter before starting the deposition will provide the interpreter with a mental map and context, enabling him/her to do a better job for you.
- An optimal seating arrangement is the interpreter across from the attorney taking the deposition and between the deponent and the court reporter. The attorney can observe the deponent's demeanor and maintain eye contact while the court reporter can hear the interpreted rendition without interference from the non-English speech.
- Identify each parties present and his/her role.
